NZ BRANCH CONFERENCE – Thursday May 13 and Friday May 14, 2021
The New Zealand Branch Committee of MLAANZ invites members and those interested in maritime law to its 2021 conference and AGM on May 13 and 14.
Following the postponement of last year's event due to the pandemic, we are very excited to offer a varied programme (updated May 12) with a range of presentations on current issues relating to the maritime and related industries. Now more than a year in to COVID-19 the conference will hear first-hand from industry how they have adapted to deal with current challenges in the supplySav chain, while Paul David QC and Matthew Flynn address the corresponding contractual and insurance issues that arise. Maintaining a topical focus, Neil Beadle will be considering the implications following the tragic events at White Island, while Bevan Marten & John Burton question the scope of Harbourmaster directions and Emily Ferguson highlights some of the liability questions relating to shipping in Antarctica. We have our usual ‘case notes’ session, with three young members providing an update on recent cases of interest before learning from Fullers Group about their experience in developing a Project Order under HSWA. The practical challenges of repatriating foreign fishing crew to New Zealand during COVID-19 will be discussed from both the industry and government perspective. With 2021 being IMO’s year of action for seafarers, we will get some insight into the effect on those key workers and what that means for the global supply chain before finishing with a surveyor’s point of view from the frontline.
The conference is an excellent professional networking opportunity, and always provides an enjoyable get-together for attendees through the Icebreaker drinks on the Thursday evening and the ever popular post-conference dinner.
