Not long to go until our Hot Issues in Maritime and Shipping Law seminar

 Dear Members,

As a member of Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand, we are pleased to invite you to our Hot Issues in Maritime and Shipping Law seminar.

The possible legal risks in maritime and shipping are countless. How equipped is your organisation to deal with the many risks and liabilities should they arise? The consequences are far too great: claims for loss, damage, delay, labour law problems, taxation issues and cargo claims to name but a few.

This half-day practical seminar in Perth on Wednesday the 14th of September, 2011 will bring together Australia’s leading maritime and shipping law experts to discuss and address the legal essentials in such an all important and thriving industry.

Do not miss out on this comprehensive program covering such topics as:

-          Legal Updates: Charterparties

-          Crucial Labor Law Challenges

-          Taxing Rights and Profits in Shipping and Maritime Law

-          Managing Cargo Claim Risks

 International Maritime Day

International Maritime Day was celebrated on 27 August 2011 in brilliant sunshine at Victoria Quay in Fremantle.  The many thousands of people that attended the event were entertained by pirates and Mermaids, and music provided by a number of bands.

The Royal Australian Navy again had a large presence and it would be fair to say that  the Frigate HMAS Newcastle and the Sumarine HMAS Farncomb tied up alongside were of enormous interest to all.

The Svitzer Tugs and the ferry rides were also popular with the crowds.

The MLAANZ display attracted its fair share of interest and demonstrated that our continued support of the event is beneficial to the association.

Many thanks to Fremantle Ports who without it support and organisation such days could not be so successful.

PIRACY:  'Glamourised in literature'

Privateers and Buccaneers - A plague on the high seas for centuries

On 30 June 2011 the West Australian branch of MLAANZ held a seminar at which the Honourable Justice Malcolm Lee presented his paper on Piracy.  The paper examines the history and nature of piracy with particular reference to the application of the laws of piracy to the waters adjacent to the State of Western Australia.

The conclusions drawn by his Honour about the laws governing piracy off our shores make for an interesting read.

Do legal loop-holes exist that may allow enterprising seafarers new opportunities or are the present laws sufficient to puncture the hull and sink such ventures?
