Welcome to the New Zealand Branch of MLAANZ
MLAANZ New Zealand Branch Committee Members 2011
Annual Conference, Hilton Hotel, Taupo, 26-27 April 2012
2011 has no doubt been an interesting year for many members. There have been a number of interesting developments in domestic legislation and developments in international treaties. The grounding of the “Rena” has provided a very lively source of debate over a number of aspects of maritime law as well as the practical difficulties of dealing with such a large scale grounding. It is expected that the 2012 conference at Taupo will be very interesting, topical and an educational opportunity for a great number of members of the New Zealand maritime community.
The conference will be at the Hilton Hotel on 26 and 27 April 2012. The conference will start with a welcoming icebreaker session on Thursday 26 April at 6.00pm. It is well worth getting to Taupo for this and it always turns into a very good evening.
On 27 April a range of speakers for industry, Government and legal will cover a wide variety of topics including the following:
· Pollution and salvage issues resulting from the “Rena”;
· The role of Maritime New Zealand in circumstances such as the “Rena”;
· Offshore exploration posed legislation;
· New Zealand ports as ports of refuge;
· The monitoring of vessels on inshore and offshore waters;
· Global marine insurance statistics and current trends;
· Underwater cultural controversies;
· Foreign charter fishing vessels.
We would encourage as many people as possible to attend. Last year’s conference at this excellent venue was well supported, and we would encourage early registrations.
There is already the ability on the Hilton Taupo website to register your interest and book accommodation. The conference programme will be out in the New Year.
The Auckland Branch recently had its end of year traditional Christmas get together. This year it was held at the venue “1885” in the Britomart area. A prize will be awarded at the conference for the best contribution of any maritime legislation or maritime law cases from that year.
Best wishes for the festive season.
